Midwives are ‘on-call’ 24 hours per day, 7 days per week but only for births and emergencies. Always call (not text) in these situations. This applies to concerns such as:
- Vaginal Bleeding
- Preterm labour
- Reduced fetal movements after 28 weeks pregnancy
Most questions can wait until your midwife appointment, we recommend writing them down to be answered during your visit. If you need to discuss something that cannot wait, please send an email, or phone between Mon-Fri, 8am-6pm.
Please do not text for advice on weekends or after hours.
Contacting Us
We support midwifery students and regularly have them working alongside us for their clinical placements, you will often meet them throughout your pregnancy. They are involved in pregnancy, labour and birth, and postnatal care. We have wonderful feedback from women who have had a student involved in their care. If you meet a student who is working with your midwife and you don’t feel comfortable for her to be involved in your care, please let your midwife know.

Midwifery Scope of Practice
We work within the midwifery scope of practice, which means we can provide health care relating to pregnancy and childbirth. We are able to prescribe within our scope of practice. If you require obstetric care, we will discuss this with you and arrange a referral for consultation with an obstetrician at the hospital. For any health concerns not related to pregnancy (including cold and flu symptoms), please see your GP as usual.
Antenatal Classes
We highly recommend booking in Antenatal Classes, to prepare yourself and your partner for pregnancy, labour/birth and having a Newborn. Our clients have thoroughly enjoyed doing paid classes through Nest and Parents Centre. Alternatively WDHB also run free classes through the Hospital. It is best to book into these early - so you don’t miss out. The class itself won’t start until later in your pregnancy.
What to Expect at your
First Appointment
Your first appointment will mostly involve your midwife finding out about your medical, obstetric and social history. Your midwife will ensure you have access to the information above, are on the appropriate pregnancy supplements - Folic Acid and Iodine, ensure booking blood tests are completed or organised, and will offer you forms for first trimester screening for downs syndrome and other conditions. The funded option is known as MSS1, involving a scan and blood test. The non-funded option is known as NIPT, involving a blood test. Please read through the following information to familiarise yourself with the screening options.
